Acute Discomfort
Ouch!! If you’ve broken a bone or cracked a tooth, you know the results – DISCOMFORT. Referred to as acute disco0mfort, this unpleasant sensation is letting your brain know that you have sustained an injury. Ideally, as the injury heals the sensation of discomfort will lessen with time.
Chronic Discomfort
But what if the discomfort you have doesn’t go away? You may be one of the millions of people that suffer from chronic discomfort, defined as discomfort that lasts at least 12 weeks. Chronic discomfort may be the result of an initial injury or illness and can unfortunately last for years.
Inflammation
Inflammation, the tenderness and swelling that usually accompanies a painful injury is a result of chemical messengers sent by the body to heal injured tissue. As the injury heals, the chemical messengers retreat and the inflammation will subside.
Unfortunately, with chronic discomfort, the body continually tries to heal itself. Eventually the accompanying inflammation continues and begins to contribute to additional health issues.
Anti-Inflammatory Herbs and Extracts
Is there was a better way to treat the issue of discomfort and inflammation than by popping ibuprofen or other pain meds? Long before the legalization of hemp derived cannabinoids, such as CBD, ancient cultures incorporated herbs and extracts that naturally fight discomfort and inflammation into their daily lives.
Turmeric
You may use turmeric to make curry, but it’s also used to heal inflammation and pain. The main active ingredient found in turmeric, curcumin has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin has the ability to suppress the markers that contribute to inflammation. Research conducted with 45 patients revealed that curcumin was more effective in treating the symptoms of tenderness and swelling of joints in people with rheumatoid arthritis.
Ginger
The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger seem to help relieve pain and improve joint function in people who have arthritis. Ginger contains phytochemicals that inhibit inflammatory markers similar to anti-arthritis medications. In a study of 56 patients using ginger for rheumatism, more than three-quarters experienced relief in discomfort and swelling.
Boswellia
Boswellia, also known as Indian Frankincense has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat various chronic inflammatory disorders. It contains a number of compounds that contribute to the extract’s anti-inflammatory properties. One study found that all the participants with osteoarthritis who received boswellia reported a decrease in knee discomfort. It was also shown to help joints heal quicker and stop the damage caused by inflammation.
Rosemary
Rosemary, a very popular herb used to season dishes most notably around Thanksgiving, contains anti-inflammatory and other healing properties. Rosemary is among the richest herbs in antioxidants. One study of patients with rheumatic diseases who consumed rosemary saw noticeable decreases in inflammation. They also found that it also had a noticeable effect on discomfort relief.
