It’s no wonder that pet adoptions are up dramatically over the recent weeks. Finding companionship and providing a home to four-legged friends can be a silver lining to this crisis. While we “shelter-in-place”, most pet shelters are actually out of adoptable animals.
While the change in work and travel schedules has made this all possible, there is another reason to the uptick. Having a pet companion with us can reduce our feelings of isolation and provide much needed stress relief.
While dogs and cats do much to lower our stress and anxiety levels, they too can experience those same responses. Household pets are not oblivious to our anxieties, and may mirror the tension and amount of stress we feel.
While housecats may appear to complain about being confined indoor 24/7, dogs may actually enjoy it, happy to have their owners at home with them. We are finding new ways to interact with our animals and play with them all day, often on their schedules, not ours.
As we begin to return to a new normal, leaving the home more, our pets will not be as happy with the changes associated with the loosing of restrictions. Pets, used to having our full attention, and with less activity at home, will have to cope with the changes, being alone while their owners are away. Coming out of isolation might actually be more of a problem, potentially causing separation-linked anxiety.
If you suspect your animal suffers from separation anxiety, please speak to your veterinarian. There are many ways to treat it, usually through a combination of training, preventive strategies, and in some cases, medications.
Many dog and cat owners, as well as veterinarians are relying on CBD hemp oil for relief. Since dogs and cats, as well as all mammals have an Endocannabinoid System, CBD hemp oil may help many of the same issue faced by their owners; anxiety, stress and discomfort.
We carry the products of Earth Buddy Pet, a full line of CBD hemp oil products including tinctures, mushroom and hemp capsules and treats for your furry companion. Their mission is to elevate and promote pet health and wellbeing and the important role our companions play in our families.
Please continue to take care of yourself and your families during these unnerving times. Please let us know if we can provide any information or support.
