Any time of year, perhaps the best present you can give yourself is a great night’s sleep—the kind where you bound of our bed, refreshed and ready to conquer what the day has in store. However, getting a good night’s sleep is an elusive goal for more than two-thirds of the adult population. When bodily discomfort or worry haunts, or the aches don’t go away, the reoccurrence of pain, anxiety and insomnia creates a vicious cycle that can be really hard to break. Whether you have all three or just two of these symptoms, it is important to know that these conditions are intertwined and feed off each other.
If you are in a state of discomfort you may worry about getting your work done. If you are constantly worried, you may have difficultly falling asleep. If you find yourself poorly rested, you may find yourself more anxious and sensitive to pain when it occurs. These states of distress create a downward spiral of discomfort, worry and sleeplessness.
How a Cycle is Created
The stress of daily discomfort can lead to excessive worry or anxiety as one tries to deal with the demands of living with a chronic illness. The body’s natural response to pain may also trigger feelings of alarm, apprehension and distress. Those who suffer from anxiety may have a lower tolerance for pain.
Chronic pain prevents the body from completely relaxing, which, in turn, blocks restful and restorative sleep. The lack of restful sleep amplifies a pain patient’s perception of pain. This in turn affects the quality of your sleep. It is often hard to distinguish whether chronic pain has led to chronic insomnia or the other way around.
Lack of sleep can also lead to increased chances of anxiety, but anxiety can also cause a lack of sleep. The ability to fall asleep may become harder due to the anxiety and the body’s sense of worry or fear. Insomnia can also make you more irritable and more worried, as your brain is not getting all the sleep it needs in order to function at normal levels.
The Cycle Can Be Broken
Pain, anxiety and insomnia are definitely closely connected. With increased anxiety, pain is likely to be worse, which can then result in greater difficulty obtaining a good night’s sleep. And those who are sleep-deprived are invariably more anxious causing more pain. Sound familiar?
This cycle of pain, anxiety and insomnia is controlled by complex chemical mechanisms and can be modified by any one or a combination of treatments. These can include diet and lifestyle changes, therapy, surgery, alternative treatments (i.e. acupuncture), medications and/or nutraceuticals. The goal of any of these interventions is to bring the body back into a healthy balance. Ideally, you don’t want to block the body’s signals, but find the root cause of what started the cycle in the first place.
The Endocannabinoid System, The Root Master Regulator
Scientists are starting to understand that underlying a body’s healthy balance is the human Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The purpose of the ECS is to regulate and bring the body back into perfect balance or homeostasis. As the primary homeostatic regulator of human physiology, the ECS holds therapeutic promise to achieve better health and wellbeing. What the scientists are studying is that the ECS works as the master signaling mechanism—keeping all our other biological systems in check.
For example, the ECS is intricately involved in the sleep-wake cycle and other circadian processes. It also plays an integral role in regulating emotional response helping to quiet the mind and achieve balance or a baseline level of stress. In addition, the ECS is known to be one of the key systems regulating discomfort, influencing processing pathways.
People are finding relief and are breaking the cycle of discomfort, worry and sleeplessness with supplementing the production of our own endocannbinoids with phytocannabinoids. In plain speak; what we need is what the plants have. We are fortunate to have discovered that hemp plants contain more than 100 different cannabinoids to help keep the ECS and other bodily systems running smoothly.
